(Senior) Interaction Designer

📑 Full-time 🏢 prosperity solutions 🌍 Germany 🏡 Remote OK
As prosperity solutions we build end-to-end solutions for investment-style pension insurances. If that doesn't make a lot of sense yet, we're happy to tell you all about it. Oh and don't worry, with investment-style we prefer the sustainable, long-term and serious kind – no day-trading, crypto, get-rich-quick schemes.

We are looking for an eager Interaction Designer (all genders) on a mid+ experience level (L3, Senior L4) anywhere in Germany (remote), to join our Team. This position is full-time, which we define as four 8-hour work days (Mo-Thu), with Fridays being at your own discretion (including not working at all). We expect people to align with and live our company values.

Foreword
A word before you dive right in: We know how it feels! Scanning countless job postings, cutting through the copy-pasted, meaningless, cliche and buzzword-ridden mumbo jumbo, desperately searching for that one thing that could somehow spark interest in a role:

"Dynamic and flexible environment", "sunny office", "competitive salary", "diverse and international team", "democratising the access to X", "„we are a family“ – have you ever heard stories of a toxic workplace, where this stuff hasn’t been a part of the careers page anyway?

Our promise to you: We try to avoid the “empty phrase” game in our job postings (and being a toxic workplace, too, of course). If in doubt: Please apply and in an interview we will find out how the collaboration could look like.

The Role
This is an opportunity for you, an ambitious and intrinsically motivated Interaction Designer, to work in a small and value-driven company, with lots of individual responsibility, freedom and room to move the needle. You will be building digital products with us, using the “Shape Up” methodology (20min intro: youtu.be/h_8M23wVjXk) and providing a component based Design System for them.

We are looking for an Interaction Designer, not a UX-Researcher and not an artist.

This means that discovery is not your focus (what is called framing in Shape Up), i.e. coming up with what needs to be built. It’s not your job either to add tiny details to the UI here and there.

There is value in that, but for this particular role we are looking for someone to focus on the how–the architecture. You will own the interactions a customer has with our products: emails, CTAs, support experiences, major features, onboarding and simple and secure login. There is no way you can do that, without learning our business domain and its challenges (pension planning and financial investments).

Within “Shape Up” you contribute in two distinct stages:

  1. Shaping – You help product managers in shaping packages of work, being the design and usability expert at the table. You ask and help to answer questions like these: “Is there enough context for the user to understand this?”, “Does this solution match our information architecture?” or “Is this worth implementing a new interaction pattern, or is it better to stick with what we already have?” This stage is both explorative and abstract.
  2. Building – On demand you support delivery teams to solve concrete design challenges and implement the solutions. You work within the boundaries of the shaped work package, that you helped to set in the previous step (”Shaping”).
Next to the “Shape Up” cycle, you will:

  • Implement and continuously improve our component-based design system, that encodes layout, typography, branding (white-label), interaction and componentization thereof. This is where you get to multiply your impact, by enabling our engineers to deliver the experience we envision.
  • Understand and work with quantitative data to understand how our users are using our products.
  • Ship white-label product themes for our partners, that match both their brands as well as accessibility and UX concerns.

Requirements

Hard Requirements
  • Existing EU work permit
  • Highly proficient in spoken and written English
  • Professional experience building digital products

The Skills we are looking for
  • You have created design systems, not libraries, before. You can advocate for their strengths, see their limitations and implement them in code.
  • This means you have frontend development skills including HTML, CSS & JS/TS and ideally React and git.
  • You focus on getting the fundamentals right and scaling them throughout the organization, not just adding bells and and whistles. You are an expert on navigation, feedback, consistency, affordances, accessibility and responsiveness.
  • You are a writer: Improving both our product language and copywriting, as well as internal communication through documentation and written work packages. If you speak German it would really help to own the copywriting process fully.

The Person we are looking for
  • You care about the product experience that eventually exist in reality, not just the design on Figma. You prefer a helpful product with mediocre visuals over a fancy design that’s useless.
  • You realize that a design is only as good as its implementation, which also includes the copywriting. You stay close to technical realities and hate “Lorem Ipsum”.
  • You feel comfortable navigating the boundaries and uncertainties of your role. You relish responsibility and would call yourself a manager of one.
  • You strive to build the best product and aim high. You pay attention to both the big picture and the small details, knowing that the right balance ultimately makes the difference.
  • You understand, align with and live our company values.

"Quick apply" is a great feature, but we still appreciate people reading our job postings in full. Add the words "cute rabbit" in the summary field of the application form and we know how you roll!

Benefits

Salary ranges
  • L3: 50-60k
  • L4 (Senior): 60-70k
To avoid confusion or disappointment: We have clear expectations for higher levels and the upper end of these salary bands. We will assess your seniority level during the interview process. These are our levels, so please don't expect having held a title previously is a guarantee for a certain level.

Bonus
We pay voluntary company-wide bonuses of an estimated 3-10%, if business performance permits, with a 100% track-record of doing so since 2019. We are in the process of making these goal-based, too.

Benefits
  • 40€/month VWL Insurance Policy. Cash value 480€/year
  • Up to 50€/month internet cost reimbursement. Net cash value 600€/year
  • Personal development budget
  • 4 day work-week/20% time
  • 28 vacation days
  • Flexible hours
  • Remote in Germany + 90 days per year work from anywhere (Berlin time ±4h)

Process
Our process consists of three rounds. No homework. After them we are ready to offer.

If you fulfil the hard requirements we will respond to every application – positively or negatively.

We celebrate difference and diversity and pledge our commitment to an inclusive workplace.

We do not discriminate based upon race, religion, color, national origin, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, gender expression, transgender status, sexual stereotypes, age, status as an individual with a disability, or other applicable legally protected characteristics.

We enable insurance brokers, wealth managers, robo-advisors, (neo-)banks, or trading-apps in Germany to offer white-label pension insurance.

At Shapers & Builders, we list jobs from companies who use Shape Up.

Shape Up is how Basecamp does product development. Some teams use it as a sane, complete process alternative to endless sprints. Others use it as a toolbox from which they pick and choose techniques and apply them to their own process.

With Shape Up, teams get to make meaningful progress cycle after cycle. Shape Up is about creating time to think strategically and giving well-bounded projects to integrated development teams.
